ART ON DISPLAY #2
After their last year edition and the aestival Art on Display summer exhibitions, the Ephemair Association returns with ART ON DISPLAY #2, a series of site-specific projects in unconventional Bucharest spaces, visually animating the city from October 15th to October 25th, 2015, transforming it into a temporary art gallery and hosting site-specific exhibitions and installations in its commercial windows and other public spaces.
The projects selected by artist Irina Botea and the Ephemair Asociation team (project coordinator) – artist and cultural manager Suzana Dan and cultural manager Silvia Rogozea – are presented as insertions into spaces that temporarily reformulate their functionality and identity.
Larisa David – ‘monumentkeeping’ / Camera: Iulius Costache. The project explores the relationship between public space, the official representations in the collective memory through statues and monuments, and the position of women and the invisible work. Masculinity as symbol of power and authority, the glorification of the past, the war and the current order constantly remind that public space opposes the domestic one. These solid representations in the city are expressions and replicas of dominant identities and values in society, imposing a hegemonic narrative of the past by excluding other identities.
Arantxa Etcheverria – ‘Comedia’, an upside down world where geometry seems the sole logic that one can grasp to find certainty.
Liliana Basarab & Delia Popa
Liliana Basarab & Delia Popa – ‘Almost said and half done (title in progress)’, a project about things half done and half said, about the obvious silence. Can the center of someone be the border of someone else? Can I listen to manele (music genre) if I live downtown? These are just a few of the questions hanging in the window shop confronting the passerby.
Gonzalo Escobar – ‘Toilet’. On the road, and under the circumstances, one encounters privileges. Public spaces become private, when in need. Toilet is a video installation of a memory but also of a condition.
Kiki Mihuță & Bogdan Olaru
Kiki Mihuță & Bogdan Olaru – ‘Travel to Utopia’. Almost everyone wants to leave at some point and we ask ourselves where to? Towards a sunnier, more beautiful, don’t-know-where-it-will-be-better place. We’ve acknowledged by now that perfection is only possible in the mind and yet we cannot stop searching. Failing to find that ideal place is a result of the way of thinking of the adult mind. An immaterial back and forth pause-journey.
Jon Dean – ‘What is the value of a penalty?’ – The instantaneous desire of self-fulfillment is explored through the metaphor of the penalty, placed inside a lottery; a dramatic moment, often conclusive, that represents either punishment or reward.
Octav Avramescu & Lucian Sandu Milea
Octav Avramescu & Lucian Sandu Milea – ‘Camuflarea luminilor la orașe’ (Camouflaging light in the city), a project that speaks of fear, curiosity and surveillance, hiding an unknown world inside a familiar reality.
Ioana Gheorghiu – ‘Act de confundare’ (Act of confusion). The work is the beginning of a case study exploring the acts of confusion – concrete situations when we cannot distinguish something from something else – the earthquake and the palpitations, for example. For a short period of time, there is the incapacity of distinguishing if the source of the experience is external or an inner one, and it is this exact state before the perception of the event is clearly determined that interests the artist.
Sillyconductor – ‘The shameful lowlands of the way I’m drifting gloomily though time’, a time stand still installation yet out of reach, intangible, almost unreal.
Carmen Nistor – ‘Inner-Rogue’, a representation of the human need to identify with a hero, to have supernatural powers and overcome limits, to fly, but unable to escape the illusion, the fantasy.
