Works by Stefhany Yepes Lozano
From illustration to embroidery, Leipzig-based Colombian artist Stefhany Yepes Lozano creates compelling visual stories inspired by her personal experiences, the places she has lived and intriguing or absurd aspects of today’s reality, human relationships, behavior and beliefs.
She conceives series that highlight the various perspectives of the themes she chooses to document, sometimes mixing apparently contrasting symbols to link different cultures, memories or moments in a time that lies suspended between the past and the present, between dreams, where all seems plausible and achievable, and the mystery of everyday life, which is more complex and unsettling than one might expect.
Human characters from real events, curious tales of love, death and the promise of revival, alien and animal creatures with supernatural powers, carriers of meaning and key elements in the narratives, combine to compose a world which is deeply intimate yet strangely alluring, the enchanting universe of an extraordinary storyteller.
Part of the series ‘Between my future and your present’, acrylic on paper, 57 cm x 42 cm
Part of the series ‘The Ride of the Away Team’, referring to the cult The Heaven’s Gate which committed suicide on March 1997 believing that behind the comet Hale-Bopp was an UFO waiting to transport them to the kingdom of heaven. “Each votive painting is the final statement of each member of the Away Team, name they choose for this last ride. This series of paintings are an invitation to leave the door open to believe that everything can be possible as I have done myself.” Acrylics on wood, variable sizes.
Part of the series ‘Some uses of the verb to live’, inspired by the chapter with the same name from the book “Thoughts of Sorts” written by George Perec: “I did a list of the places where I have lived so far, about the people that had lived with me and some circumstances and anecdotes that had occurred on those places.” Acrylic on paper, 29,7 cm x 42 cm.
Part of ‘Before I met you’, series of love stories from the past. Hand-embroidered handkerchiefs, 24cm x 24cm.
