Sorina Vazelina’s box of memories
The personal exhibition “Cutia” (The Box) by Romanian graphic designer, illustrator and cartoonist Sorina Vazelina, on view at Galeria Posibilă in Bucharest through July 12th, 2015, consists in a “box” of comics and family photographs with her grandparents as protagonists and their experiences as a reflection of national history.
In her artist book and collection of fragments, she uses different graphic and print techniques to translate the past into sequences. She gradually reveals moments in history, the war and inter-war life, the deportations, scarcity and impact of the communist regime on her relatives. In her research, Sorina takes the position of the observer, trying to distance herself from her family relationships in order to explore the course of events as objectively as possible. The result is an extraordinary display of complex and powerful visual narratives of what has deeply marked the present, how we think and act, a surprising intersection between memories and recent history in search of rediscovering why and who we are.
The exhibition is open from Thursday to Saturday, 5 pm – 9 pm / 6 Popa Petre Street, Bucharest.
