Ceramic sculptures by May Snevoll von Krogh
May Snevoll von Krogh creates enthralling ceramic sculptures and installations revealing contrast and tension between a fictitious appearance of innocence and beauty and a grotesque and violent imagery inspired from reality’s cruelty. The fragility of the children represented in her works, their unexpected gestures and inner conflicts occurring in situations far beyond the ordinary become a reflection of the human state of confusion and anxiety in today’s society.
The artist is also interested in how human actions and decisions may affect the environment, as in the case of her installation ‘Ataraxia’, consisting of a field of flowers made from high fired porcelain, where each flower is illuminated from the inside: “I wanted to emphasize the repercussions of the choices we make, both as a desire for increased awareness and responsibility, but also as a reminder of our own vulnerability. The title Ataraxia is a greek term used by Pyrrho and Epicurus for a lucid state of robust tranquility, characterized by ongoing freedom from distress and worry.”
Through powerful metaphors and thought-provoking contradictions, May Snevoll von Krogh tells the unpleasant yet strikingly present stories we often hide from, offering the viewer an intense and challenging experience.
