Javier Calleja – Broken white @ Yusto/Giner
The Yusto/Giner gallery presents the solo show ‘Broken white’ by Javier Calleja, running through September 10th, 2015 (Calle Madera 9, 29603 Marbella, Spain). The exhibition takes us from micro to macro universes, at the intersection between the childish and the mature, combining an innocent, yet often ironic approach, with a sharp critique of our behavior, limits and the events surrounding us.
Playing with the scale of the represented objects, placing them in the margins or filling the center of the space, the artist distorts reality in order to highlight the bold messages attached to his unnaturally amplified matches or pencils, which through these changes in size gain new meanings and even their own identity through personification. Although we notice the absence of man, we feel the human presence in the traces of the pencils or the large post-it note on the wall. The viewer becomes an accomplice in this impossible world, temporary accepting its existence, a mix of minimalism, pop and surrealism expressed using various techniques – drawing, painting, sculpture and murals.
