The drawings of Cécile Carrière
The pen and ink drawings of French artist Cécile Carrière revolve around the representation of the human body, with focus on two decisive and symbolic moments – birth and death, as well as the evolution of man from the beginning to the end of his life journey.
Her vision, influenced by studies in philosophy, shows life and death as an endless circle with various flows (nutrition, gestation, sexuality, and so on), and uses the image of the mountain as the meeting point between the two. In this process, man and nature (the mountain) become one.
“The image of the mountain is this impossible place which represents at the same time the human body and the outside world. This indistinction in the Greek philosophy is the Chaos. In the series mountain-contacts, the flow of life goes out of a circular shape which represents the primitive chaos”.
