Alexandru Rădvan @ aestival ART ON DISPLAY
After its successful launch in October 2014, with ten produced projects welcomed by both general and professional public, and its additions to the White Night of the Galleries #9, ART ON DISPLAY returns with a special aestival edition opening with the exhibition “Romantic Tomb for Pasolini” by Alexandru Rădvan, hosted at Musette from July 2nd through July 26th, 2015 (114 Calea Victoriei Blvd., Bucharest).
ART ON DISPLAY project, initiated and organized by Ephemair Association, visually enriches and animates the city of Bucharest, producing and presenting exhibitions and site specific installations in the shops window displays and other similar spaces with access from the main boulevards: “This approach to the urban space is a proposal for reflection on the aesthetic aspect of the city, thus forcing a dialogue with the excessive quantity of commercial advertisements which invades our daily life. The rhythm created by those artworks and artistic interventions in the city can generate a positive tension between the seductive images created by the market industry and the ones generated by the artists’ need to assert this very visible space.” The public usually has no access inside these temporary exhibition spaces and experiences art through the window, art becoming accessible to a larger audience, yet remaining intangible, something to reflect upon instead of the intrusive advertising that reigns over the urban landscape.
Alexandru Rădvan is aestival ART ON DISPLAY first invited artist and his excellently curated personal exhibition pays homage to Pasolini: “There comes a moment when you feel like re-organizing thoughts, emotions, dreams. You feel like doing something important, showing your respect and gratitude for the people that meant a great deal to you. Pharaonic visions in small spaces, imperial grandeur in a daily shabby. Improvisation. This is my gesture, Pier Paolo! I wish I had met you! Forty years after your death, I present to you this monument made of urban poems: concrete, tin, pipes, showcase, sidewalk… You taught me that only the vision remains grand, the means of it don’t. Thank you for teaching me how to bear reality.”
This year, ART ON DISPLAY continues its program for the 114 Calea Victoriei location throughout the summer, with monthly guest artists, until mid October, when the second extended edition is scheduled.
Although not part of the exhibition, from another window, across the street of the space where it was hosted, two silhouettes were silently gazing towards Alexandru Rădvan’s intervention.
<UPDATE>
Unfortunately, on the night of July 10th, one of the works part of the exhibition “Romantic Tomb for Pasolini” was vandalized, forcing an early and unexpected closing of the show. The official statement of the organizers can be read here (Romanian only).
