The works of Alejandro Pasquale
For Alejandro Pasquale, the mask is a symbol of escape, of liberation, enabling the detachment from reality and the entrance to a new world, of the mind, which is depicted in an idealized form of nature, in luxuriant environments and timeless spaces, thus the vintage clothing used to erase the pressure of time.
There is a meditative state suggested by the eyes of the characters, either open yet mesmerized by unknown beauty or closed as if dreaming. No gestures indicate what they feel or experience, and we cannot tell for certain if they are abandoned, sad or delighted. The children, perhaps privileged to access these fantastic realms due to their innocence, stand still, almost breathless, in contemplation, living inside their own imagination, with no intent to ever wake up from the apparent inner peace and calmness of the universe they themselves have created.
Another way to interpret Alejandro Pasquale’s work is to consider each image a memory. In this case, the characters would return to their past, to the beginning, their childhood and the moments when nothing seemed to constrain the possibilities of happiness, the fulfillment of their aspirations and desires.
The artist explains the process of creation: “On the images of my artworks I attempt to show what there is beyond the linearity of the story of the characters portrayed. I compose with the idea of expressing worlds or scenes created by the imagination of these characters. (…) I create the sketches with the help of images found on the internet or botanical encyclopedia. Once the sketch is closer to my initial idea, I take it to the final support. In this transference from the sketch to the final support, the composition elements are processed and become a kind of synthesis of the original images, even sometimes completely different. I am not interested at this time to make an accurate representation of the reality of each element, but a juxtaposition where my imagination is present in every moment of the process of the work.”
