Metonymy by Teodora Vișineanu

We visited Teodora Vișineanu’s solo show – ‘Metonymy’, curated by Simona Vilău and hosted at Gallery 26 in Bucharest, open to the public by appointment from September 2nd to 25th, 2014.

The figure of speech used as title for the exhibition highlights the essence of the show, where the focus is the fragment, but you can easily relate to the whole – the human body, while elements interact to potentiate or antagonize the expressiveness of the fragment.

During our visit, Teodora shared a few insights about the works on display. Our conversation revealed that her interest in the expressiveness of hands and feet is not necessarily a novelty. Previously, some woks were simple sketches, there are series focusing on the same gesture, but the hand, for example, varies from a male to a female, an old to a young one, or there are different objects used to change the meaning of that gesture.

We noticed her preference to place the hands and feet near objects that might cause harm – scissors, strange mechanisms and so on, while colour seems to amplify the dangerous potential that the intersection of these elements has.
