Sergiu Chihaia – Penguins

Earlier this year, part of his exhibition ‘Exodus Wonderland’, hosted by Atelier030202 from September 30th to October 15th, 2015, Sergiu Chihaia brought his fragile penguin sculptures to the streets of Bucharest in a thought-provoking and interactive artistic performance manifested as a reflection of migration, today’s crisis of the survival of species and pressing environmental and social issues.

Human behavior, needs and curiosities are also imitated in this restless process of finding a home and adapting to the challenges imposed by new unnatural circumstances. We see the penguins searching for food in the garbage, walking around the city, waiting in the bus station, entering school or the church. The position of their bodies, slightly bent, suggests their tragic condition reminding of our own captivity and imminent decay.

Sergiu Chihaia is currently an Assistant Professor at the National University of Arts Bucharest, Fashion Design department, and part of the upcoming Bucharest Biennale 7 team.
