Radu Carnariu | Art Yourself Gallery

Romanian visual artist Radu Carnariu recently had a personal exhibition at Art Yourself Gallery, in Bucharest.

“Animalele Distopiei” (Animals of Dystopia) addresses the paradoxical imagery of the need of power and the use of myths and symbols such as the heroic savior and  the messianic syndrome, which lies in the subconscious of every human being touched by the feeling of uniqueness and exemplarity. Every individual truly aware of his own value in the ideological climate from which he emerges faces the temptation of magical possession of reality, the tyranny of individual sense, the insidious self-mystification, which becomes personal mythology. In this case, dystopia (dys – difficult, topos – place) is the purgatory of imagination covering with fantasy identities the line between personal image and the social image of the self. Before becoming Aristotle’s social animals (zoon politikon), we need to tame with patience and compassion the fantastic animals of our own dystopias. The oldest cold war that defines this Faustian condition is a battle between two verbs: to be or to have.
