Mimi Ciora – Fairies and Hearts @ Galateca

Mimi Ciora’s solo show Fairies and Hearts, on view at Black Cube Galateca Gallery in Bucharest through November 19th, 2016 and curated by Ioana Ciocan, presents a mesmerizing world inhabited by mysterious female creatures bearing bizarre wounds and cryptic tattoos.

Oscillating between life and death, engaged in mystic rituals, devoured or perhaps empowered by serpents also marked on their unusually white skin, the characters seem caught in a trance, in a moment of meditation that may anticipate a spiritual and even physical transition. Several female figures appear to be prisoners of floating wombs suggesting rebirth. With few exceptions, the eyes are sealed, yet vision may not be absent, but within the mind of these troubled beings.

Hearts lie on a table in the middle of the Black Cube room creating the impression of sacrifice, with the mirror beneath them reflecting the image of the Mimian fairies. For a few moments while inside the gallery, the viewer is carried into another dimension and unconsciously becomes part of an ancestral order he or she cannot resist.

The Fairies project was also displayed at Calina Art Gallery Timișoara in May 2016.
