Isaac Cordal – Welcome
The solo show ‘Welcome’ by Isaac Cordal, curator Davide Rossillo, marks the beginning of Memorie Urbane – Urban Festival and a new phase of their project Street Art Place, which after a year since the online launch becomes an actual gallery space, situated in the medieval heart of the city of Gaeta, Italy (Piazza Traniello, Gaeta Vecchia).
In the exhibition, the artist introduces the viewer to his small figurative sculptures, tiny people dressed in their grey business suits and white lab coats or wrapped in blankets, each appearance indicating the social status of the depicted characters and the absurd or tragic situation they find themselves in, despite their power, privileges or weakness. It is interesting that many prove to be middle-aged men, perhaps a time when the veil falls to show the errors or irreversibly embed the illusion, the flaws and stereotypes into the mind to permanently alter the ways of seeing.
The works are a reflection of society’s major issues, bringing into discussion topics such as the refugee crisis, human dependency on technology, control of big data and how individuals are reduced to numbers and statistics. The pieces also highlight the alienation resulting from being captive inside a lost paradise – a regime of decadence, abandon, egocentrism and ignorance that the characters do not seem to be fully aware of. The irony is that man is responsible for creating this world of confusion, anxiety and despair, a mirage of progress leading to his own enslavement and madness until he reaches the final act – suicide. In this carefully constructed scenario, visitors are not only spectators but observers of a fabricated context which is rather a symbol of the current human condition and the nature of man’s relationship with his surrounding environment.
The exhibition is on view through April 17th, 2016 (Saturday 3 – 8 pm, Sunday 10.30 am – 1 pm, 3.30 – 8 pm / on appointment: +39 3490567388, email@example.com). The event represents the start of the fifth edition of Memorie Urbane, which will last until the end of October, with crowning events from May 20th to June 5th, 2016. This year, the festival will gather more than 30 international artists and will involve several Italian municipalities: Cassino, Fondi, Formia, Gaeta, Santi Cosma e Damiano, Terracina, Valmontone, Ventotene.
