George Anghelescu – Collateral Effects
The solo show ‘Collateral Effects’ by George Anghelescu (interviewed), curator Silviu Pădurariu (Unrest/Bucharest), organizers Aiurart and H’art Gallery, is on view at Cărturești Carusel through November 29th, 2015 (55 Lipscani, Old Town, Bucharest).
The exhibition features both recent and early works of the artist, including several paintings from the 2014 solo show “Dulce et Decorum”, brought together to evoke the tragedy of everyday victims of political regimes and wars, of violence and self-destruction, the man-made atrocities devouring their own creators, the individual and human relationships, by amputating emotion and eliminating empathy. Life becomes a statistic and, perhaps worst of all, all these absurd numbers of millions and thousands of usually intended deaths that we often hear about in the media, yet rarely experience, are perceived as normality. Far from us and our kind, we’ve become used to the death of the other.
This contradiction in human behavior, generator of creation and destruction at the same time, the irony of the hypocrite manifestation of educated beliefs, the global threats of the moment, the social and cultural aspects of different societies in a world based on conflict and how they impact human evolution on multiple levels, from shaping the collective mentality to determining inner struggles and deviations, are themes that interest the artist. Therefore, tension is always present in his works, along with the appalling stillness preceding the inevitable tragedy that leaves behind a haunting uncertainty – who is the murderer and who are the victims.
