The works of David Cristobal
The illustrations of visual artist David Cristobal show an ongoing interest in the human form. With a surgeon’s precision, he reshapes the human face and other features making use of interesting juxtapositions, that often include animals.
Through various interventions, the skin gains the texture of wood or, when erased, reveals the anatomical structure of the skull. Likewise, the head of a newborn becomes an eggshell and a metaphor of birth, while a beard can be an ideal mask for hidden thoughts or simply an identity marker. However, the characters often seem silent, absent, mesmerized, conveying a sense of bizarre emptiness, and sometimes of curious madness.
