Danny van Ryswyk: Exploring the unexplainable

Dutch artist Danny van Ryswyk combines traditional techniques with today’s 3D technology to create striking sculptures resonating with all that is scientifically unexplainable and immeasurable. His fascination with the absurd, oneiric, mystical and supernatural experiences has a profound impact on his work, often described as macabre and odd yet undeniably alluring.

Inspired by old Victorian photography, the monochromatic figures, carefully painted by hand to the smallest details, show children wearing animal masks or the inverted cross while apparently praying to demonic gods, surrounded by rabbits or holding human skulls and bones, with their skin painted with mysterious patterns and symbols or in postures reminding of rituals.

The works reveal a powerful contrast between the presumed innocence of the characters and their dark gestures. In addition, the transparent vintage bell jars they seem trapped in unveil this surreal, strange and perhaps forbidden new world to the viewer as once in a cabinet of curiosities, and separate the paranormal from our precious normality, speaking of man’s resistance to the unknown. In a century led by science and technology, the incomprehensible aspects of our complex reality become uncomfortable, overwhelming and terrifying, a threat. And so do the forgotten practices of the past, even of religious nature, since their force and outcome continue to riddle and trouble the rational minds, remaining outside of our immediate grasp and control.

Danny van Ryswyk skillfully manages to insert a tenebrous fantasy into the vulnerable present, playfully shaking the principles of the latter and challenging the viewer to surrender, at least for a moment, to the enthralling alternative he proposes.
